A song written from a personal experience, encouraging us to center our Christmas celebrations on the Christ Child.
A song written from a personal experience, encouraging us to center our Christmas celebrations on the Christ Child.
Ann Luke Bailey
I sat at my piano just the other day
Hoping to write a Christmas song.
But, try as I might, I couldn’t find a way…
All of the notes and the words were wrong.
I thought of the things that make the season great,
Of family, friends, and loved ones near,
The snow and the Christmas trees,
The kids on Santa’s knee,
The feelings we get this time each year.
And then at my door, I heard the carolers
Singing the songs of ancient lore.
Familiar and simple were their melodies
Reminding me what we have Christmas for:
Jesus is the reason for the season!
We celebrate the birth of Christ, our King!
The angels sang it long ago.
But now OUR voices ring
And Jesus is the reason that we sing!
I thought of the Christ-child as a tiny babe,
Of Mary, as joyously she wept.
I wondered if Joseph sang a lullaby
Soothing the babe as his mother slept.
I saw how our Savior grew from boy to man,
Envisioned him at his mother’s knee,
Beheld how he learned the trade of Joseph’s gentle hands.
I followed him to Gethsemane.
So now, as I offer you this gift I bring
Wrapped in the memory of that sight,
I hope we remember that the greatest gift
Was given to the world that first Christmas night.
Jesus is the reason for the season!
We celebrate the birth of Christ, our King!
The angels sang it long ago.
But now OUR voices ring
And Jesus is the reason that we sing!
Jesus is the reason for the season!
We celebrate the birth of Christ, our King!
The angels sang it long ago.
But now OUR voices ring
And Jesus is the reason that we sing!
Yes, Jesus is the reason that we sing!
